Shelters In Crisis!!
|
Shelters across the country are in crisis right now, overloaded with unwanted rabbits
who are in danger of being euthanized. Blame it on Easter "impulse purchases" or
simply the amazing reproductive capabilities of rabbits, but once again this year,
If you can find room in your home, please consider helping your local shelter or rescue by
adopting or fostering a bunny in need - you'll be saving a life. Literally.

Easter And Bunnies Don't Mix

Please Don't Give Pets As Gifts!!
|
Shelters and rescues are inundated with animals that were given as
gifts to people who didn't really want them and don't know how to take
care of them. They expect this year to be no different, beginning on
the day after Christmas. Please don't give a live animal as a gift -
give a stuffed plush toy instead, or consider making a donation to a
rescue or shelter in someone's name as a gift. Just please don't give
a live animal as a gift - it requires a lifelong commitment to the
pet, and too often they get shortchanged. Thanks!!

Farmed-Animal Protection Law Needs Your Help!!
Representatives Christopher Shays and Peter DeFazio have introduced
legislation (HR 5557, the Farm Animal Stewardship Protection Act) that
would begin protecting farmed animals (which includes rabbits, of
course) against some of the worst factory farm abuses. Here is the
PETA action alert link:
http://www.peta.org/actioncenter/ActionAlerts-item.asp? id=1965&int=weekly_enews
Here is the link to current co-sponsors of the bill:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR05557:@@@P
Please consider writing a letter to your representative to co-sponsor
this bill, if he/she is not already. Below is a sample letter. If
they are a co-sponsor, a letter to thank them for doing so is nice.
You may use this
sample letter
to help you get started.

Say NO To Rabbit Meat!!
Each year more than 8 million rabbits are raised and slaughtered for
their meat by approximately 200,000 producers across the
country. Known primarily as a cottage industry, American rabbit-meat
production is largely unregulated by the federal authorities and
removed from the public eye.
You can read more
here, and you can see the deplorable conditions these
poor rabbits are forced to live in
here.

Tell L.L.Bean To Stop Selling Rabbit Fur!!
Please contact LL Bean about the fact that they are selling rabbit
fur-lined men's hats and gloves. Remind them that these rabbits suffer
horribly in factory farms and are killed brutally. Tell them you will
no longer shop at LL Bean as long as they are selling real fur and that
equally warm gloves and hats can be sold that are cruelty-free. Ask them to
reconsider the sale of items rooted in suffering. And to join
progressive fur-free retailers such as Gap, Banana Republic, American Eagle,
Aeropostale, H&M, Forever 21, J. Crew, LandsEnd and others. They also
need to know that fur bearing animals are not covered under the Humane
Slaughter Act. Ranch-raised animals are electrocuted through their genitals,
poisoned with pesticides, or asphyxiated with carbon monoxide from unfiltered
engine exhaust. Those who don't die swiftly are skinned alive.

Urge Congress To Rescue Pets Too!!
The HSUS Urges Congress to Pass "PETS" Act to Keep People and Animals
Together During Disasters
The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act,
H.R. 3858, requires state and local emergency management agencies that
receive federal funding to make plans for people with pets or the
disabled who rely on service animals to safely evacuate along with
their animals in the event of a disaster.

Urge Clergy To Speak Out About Easter Bunnies!!
Easter is a very sad time of year for bunnies and bunny
lovers. Although bunnies are celebrated as part of Easter,
the sad reality is that most people don't know what they're getting
into when they give or get a pet rabbit on a whim, and shortly after
the novelty wears off and they are left caring for an animal they
didn't really want.
Please join us in urging members of the clergy to speak to their
congregations on behalf of all the unwanted pets that arise from the
Easter celebration, so that hopefully we can prevent the inevitable
abandonment (or worse) that occurs shortly after Easter every year.
For more information, please see this page
Here is a sample letter that you can use to
form your own letter, or you can simply copy it and send it to any/all
clergy members you know.

Tell The USDA To Protect Rabbits From Inhumane Slaughter
The USDA has classified rabbits as poultry to deny them protection
from humane slaughter. You can read the Humane Farming Association's
article
here, or if you want to spare
yourself the details and simply contact the appropriate person, you
can find that information
here.

Stop The Senseless Treadmill Experiments On Rabbits
Medical experts agree that moderate exercise is good for pregnant
women and their babies. This conclusion is based on both physician
observation and more than 20 years of clinical studies. O’Hagan of
Midwestern University in Chicago, however, is using $200,000 in
government funds to investigate questions long settled by clinical
research. In this case, O’Hagan wants to know how exercise affects the
flow of blood to the uterus of pregnant women - but she isn’t
examining pregnant women. Instead, O’Hagan is impregnating 60 rabbits,
implanting probes and catheters into them, and forcing them to run on
a motorized treadmill. At the end of her experiment, O’Hagan kills the
rabbits, cuts them open, and examines their fetuses.

Say NO to the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act
The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (H.R.4239) with
companion bill (S1926), was drafted to shield
animal-use corporations from legal protest.
If H.R. 4239 is enacted, non-violent objection and
civil disobedience, boycotts, and even influential
media campaigns would become terrorist activities if
linked to "loss of profits" for agribusiness, research
laboratories, fur farms, circuses, and other "animal
enterprises."
Under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, citizens
who exercise their First Amendment rights to free
speech, free assembly and free expression are labeled
terrorists and face significant time behind bars.
Please go to
http://www.stopaeta.org/
to write your elected representatives declaring your opposition to HR
4239.
